Dr. John Matthew Powell is an author, teacher & preacher, scholar & theologian specializing in Biblical Studies, Biblical Theology, Systematic Theology, Textual Criticism, and Historical Theology (in the first three centuries). He has a BA in Bible and Theology, BS in Telecommunications Management, MA in Theological Studies, and MS in IT Network Architecture. Motivated by his deep commitment and love for the Bible and authority, coherence, and inspiration of Scripture as God’s inspired revelation to mankind, Dr. Powell pursued and completed his Ph.D. in Bible Exposition (concentrating on/in comprehension, interpretation, and application of the biblical text. His scholarly work focuses on the unity of Luke–Acts in first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts, early Christian theology, and the development of the New Testament in the first three centuries AD. His other/additional research interests include the Second Temple Period, Old and New Testament History, and articulating the relevant and historical Contexts of Scripture. In his doctoral research, he is particularly known for his work on narrative structure, theological continuity, and the use of ancient rhetorical and literary conventions within the New Testament. As an author, Dr. Powell has written extensively on the text of Scripture – which harmonizes and deals with the text itself, the history in the text, the history around the text, and the history outside the text in order to bring round about a complete understanding of the meaning of the text in its original historical context and setting. Biblical comprehension, interpretation, and doctrinal clarity are focus areas sought to bridge rigorous academic scholarship with accessible exposition for both academic and ecclesial audiences. His publications and teaching aim to demonstrate how careful attention to language, historical setting, and canonical context guards against theological distortion as necessary to enrich contemporary Christian faith and practice. His theological commitments are openly confessional and Scripture as the first priority, and where he holds to only Scripture as being divinely inspired, authoritative, and unified – the gift of God’s Word to us. His biblical scholarship reflects a conviction that theology must remain accountable to the text of Scripture itself rather than to later Church creeds, traditions, post-biblical and modern interpretations and assumptions. Outside his academic and ministerial work, He enjoys traveling with his family and engaging in long Bible discussions with people. His work reflects a lifelong dedication to understanding God’s voice and message to his generation, and proclaiming its enduring relevance for the Church today.
